This app is dedicated to my grandma. Last year, she started having a visible neurodegenerative disease. Now she cannot move, but most critically, she has lost neural control over her tongue and cannot speak with others. All she can convey is nodding yes or no. She often feels depressed that she can't communicate with her loved ones.
Since I live in the other half of the world, I cannot help her physically. This is why I created Speech Help, an app that helps the people who live with her understand what she is trying to say.
One of my relatives who lives there sent me a list of vocabulary that she uses often. Initially, I decided to have the app list the words alphabetically, but that idea didn't really have value as an app, and it took too long for her to indicate yes or no for each word. So in the improved version, I made a modification to the alphabetic part. There is now a grid of the 25 letters of the alphabet. If a letter is clicked, only the words that start with that letter will show up, simplifying the process of finding a word, while taking less time. There are only 25 letters because there are really no common words that start with the letter x. To add more value to the app, there is also a "Suggested" tab, that shows the twelve words that are the most commonly used words. Additionally, the user can click the "New Word" tab to add a custom word. To delete a word, just find the word and long press the button to delete it.
I really hope that this app helps my grandma, others like her all around the world, and their caretakers.
